That confirms there is a software conflict on that computer between the scanner and the HP scanning application. Its going to be tough to isolate it further if the usual uninstall and reinstall does not repair the problem.
You may have to consider reformatting the computer to start over from a clean state. Reinstall the HP Software right away and then add in any other applications you need one at a time. Test the scanner each time to see if you can figure out which application is causing the defect with the HP software. Truely a troublesome isolation project that most are not interested in doing. I'd doubt HP would have much interest or support available for you either since they normally stop software support as soon as the installation wizard says complete.
Worst case scenario you have to get used to using the 3rd party scanning application as your main scan app.
