hp laserjet pro 300 color mfp -- cannot fax from computer

When I attempt to send a fax from my computer, which is wired network connected to the laserjet 300 mfp, I get the message "Unable to communicate with the device."  This occurs when I click on "HP Scan" or when I select the HP fax as a printer in MS Word.  The printer otherwise works fine.  I can scan to and print from the computer.
