LaserJet Default Paper Size Issue for m400 and M200 series printers

If you own an m251, m276, m401, or m425 and have a notice the product randomly “initializing” on the control panel. Please power cycle the device to recover from this error message then check to see if your default paper size is set to A4. This error is caused when the default paper size is set to A4 and the paper in the paper tray is Letter size.

First, print a configuration report to check the default paper size:

1. Print a Configuration Report from the device:
1. Access the products Setup Menu by selecting the Setup Icon ().
2. Select Reports.
3. Select Configuration Report.
2. Check the default paper size setting:
1. Locate the Paper Settings heading on the printed report.
2. Check the paper size selected for Default Paper Size.

Here are several methods to correctly set the default paper settings in your printer:

Control Panel Methods:

Touch Screen Control Panel

1. Access the products Setup Menu by selecting the Setup Icon ().
2. Select System Setup.
3. Select Paper Setup.
4. Select Default Paper Size.
5. Select Letter from the list.

2-Line LCD Displays

1. Press the OK button to enter the Setup Menu.
2. Select System Setup and press OK to enter the menu.
3. Highlight Paper Settings and then choose OK .
4. Scrolll to Default Paper Size and press OK.
5. Scroll to Letter and press OK to select it.

Embedded Web Server (EWS) Method:

NOTE: The device must be network connected to use this method.

1. Open a web browser and type the IP address of the product into the address bar of the browser and press enter on the keyboard. This will open the device's EWS.
2. Select the System tab.
3. From the left navigation pane, select Paper Setup.
4. Set Default Paper Size to Letter.
5. Click the Apply button at the lower right of the page to save the change.
