Machine running Linux, fresh installation of Fedora 20, fresh install of hplip-3.14.4
Have a M1212mfp printer. Can print to it, can fax from it, can scan from it, except that hp-scan does not work properly.
The pdf file produced by hp-scan is readble by evince or xpdf or adobe reader, but when I try to compress it using pdf2ps, I get the message that it is an invalid file and that I should report the problem to ReportLabs.
My understanding of hp-scan is that it uses libsane for the back-end, but something isn't working properly. When I use xsane to scan a two page document, I can compress the initial 14 MB pdf file. hp-scan on the same two page document produces apdf file around 12 MB in size. In either case, compresion is critical if I am to attach it to an email.
The compression technique is pdf2ps followed by ps2pdf (best compression technique I have found). On the xsane scanned document, the compressed file is around 133 kB. An earlier version of hp-scan inside an earlier version of Fedora 20 worked just fine. The final hp-scan pdf file could be compressed without any difficulties.
Am mystified. If xsane works, you would think hp-scan should too. Any ideas on how to fix this? Using hp-scan is faster and easier than using xsane.
