Tinyhuntress & I have worked on the scanner error code 5 problem some more.  The down arrow and OK button solution works sometimes, but the scanner function is disabled.  Whenever you restart the printer, you have to repeat the down arrow, OK technique.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  Very frustrating.  What we ended up doing is taking the top off of the scanner bed, then removing the glass.  There is a black plastic, somewhat triangular cover on the scanner light carriage that we removed to do some more diagnostics.  We moved the carriage all the way to the right side of the bed and tried various things before we realized that we, of course, needed to have the laser light see the white stripe under the glass.  DUH!  We put the glass back and it worked...It found home every time!  We put the whole thing back together when we realized that we had not replaced the black plastic cover on the carriage, so we took it apart again, replaced the cover, and tried it again.  Back to the same problem.  So, after trying it again and again with and without that cover, we are now running the printer with that black plastic cover removed from the carriage.  So far, the only thing that we have noticed is that the printing is slightly lighter.  Adjust for darkness, and we're in business again!
